Arpa y Aulos is an ensemble inspired by two of the most ancient instruments in the history of our culture: the lyre and the aulos. Both instruments came to Greece from Asia Minor. The lyre became the characteristic instrument for the cult of Apollo and the aulos for the followers of the god Dionysus. Music was seen as a representation of the passions and states of the soul, and the Greeks believed that music could affect a person's character and behavior. Music, then, could penetrate the soul. It is these thoughts that have inspired the creation of Arpa y Aulos
Designed as musical journeys through time, the programs of Arpa y Aulos encompass music from the Renaissance to the present day. Just as it is important to understand the music of the past, it is vital to play the music of our time. To that end, the duo has commissioned new music written especially for the ensemble. The duo specializes in concert-lectures in both English and Spanish and has been very active in community concerts and educational programs throughout Los Angeles and southern California.
